Been asked: "What do you like for footwork drills for kickboxing?"
Don't separate boxing footwork drills or kickboxing footwork drills or wrestling footwork drills.
Combine them all into one. Fighting footwork drills.
As far as footwork drills go, here is what I do. There is a progression but I start off by drilling in isolation...
First is footwork only.
Picking a single footwork movement and drilling that for few minutes or few dozen reps. Such as forward or backward shuffle or lateral movement or step pivots.
Then I incorporate few of these together. Fluently combining them together and flowing between them.
Starting slow then picking up speed.
Then I begin to add head movement along with footwork.
Forward or backward shuffle or lateral movement or step pivots with moving my head at the same time.
Making myself a very difficult target to hit.
Next I begin to add strikes.
I move using fighter's footwork. I move my head as I do. I begin to punch at the same time.
Forward or backward shuffle or lateral movement or step pivots with head movement and with striking.
Sometimes I only move.
Other times I move and strike.
And then other times I add in head movement as I move and strike.
Flowing between all 3.
The most important part of drilling whether it's punching, footwork or head movement is slowing it down at first then picking up speed second. Work on technique, work on movement, work on flow. Then add in other components. Then pick up speed.
Drill shadow boxing first to master technique, movement, flow and speed.
Then drill heavy bag second for technique, movement, flow, speed AND also power, distance and range. Heavy bag will give you feedback.
Don't get tagged. Become untouchable. Get "Fighter's Footwork", the complete program to developing footwork and moving while striking for fighting, MMA, boxing, self-defense.
