One of the best ways to improve your striking technique, footwork and start putting together seamless combination and transitions is to do shadow boxing flow drills.
It has helped me build the muscle memory, refine movement, technique, increase speed and precision with my strikes.
It's a drill you need to constantly re-introduce into your training rotation. Here is the breakdown.
Flow drill emphasizes controlled, deliberate movement focused on flow and technique.
Use the drill during shadow boxing but it could also be adapted to use on the heavy bag.
Key principle is to FLOW.
Shadow box without any speed, snap or power. Focus on technique and fluid motion rather than intensity.
The speed should be anywhere between 25-50%. By slowing down, you'll start to refine your smoothness and flow, which will translate to faster, more precise strikes over time.
You should also incorporate footwork and head movement. Move in and out, use lateral steps and pivots.
During each round, concentrate on the following fundamental 4 punches (from Striking Fundamentals: Volume 1):
As well as the 7 essential punches (from Striking Fundamentals: Volume 2).
Solo Punches: focus on individual punches to drill technique and correct body mechanics.
Combinations: Combine the above punches into fluid sequences, drilling how they flow together and their transitions.
Footwork: Integrate footwork movement such as step-in, step-out, lateral and of course pivots.
To add another layer of complexity, incorporate a rope into your shadow boxing.
Hang a rope between two stationary points and use it as a guide to practice head movement, footwork and flow.
More on the rope drill here.
The most critical and often overlooked aspect of this drill is slowing down. By reducing speed, you focus on:
Do not rush through this drill. Got to slow it down and focus on each strike, each combination, each movement.
Remember: “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.” It's a perfect quote for a reason.
To fully understand all 11 punches (four fundamental and seven essential) and learn over 20 combinations, get Striking Fundamentals: Vol.1 and Vol.2. These 2 courses provide detailed breakdowns of each punch, covering how to throw with speed, power and flawless technique. They also outline essential combinations you need to master.
